The Hochman Method in Action
Starting with explicit instruction at the sentence level, the Hochman Method builds a solid foundation in writing skills. Many teachers move away from teaching sentence-level writing in the intermediate and upper grades. However, there are numerous sentence-level skills that their students have not yet mastered.
At Forge Education, we have developed a writing curriculum that begins with explicit sentence instruction, regardless of grade level. Does this mean that all students do the same work? Absolutely not. Sentence-level instruction varies in both complexity and rigor based on content and grade level expectations.
In this short clip, one student acts out the components of a sentence to the recording of a chant in her own voice. “A sentence needs a who or what and an action word!” Explicit instruction, content embedded writing tasks and multisensory experiences are all a part of what help students retain concepts to be demonstrated in their own writing.
